thinking about making some progress of their own. luck in a pickle is of course just a working title at the moment, i’m still thinking about changing it to something else when we get towards the end, but i remember what a struggle it was to come up with a title for the first in this series. never again, the prequel to electra is going to be a free give away from amazon for five days starting 11th pickle – wip 5 luck in a pickle – wip 4 well, marc and lucy are off on their big journey – or at least the first of their big journeys. i rather think they’ll have to take at least one more before they’ve finished. i do think that this might be a tad more adventurous than they anticipated. but i also think i’ll need to re-write the build up to it. it feels a bit clunky at the moment. it seems to have elements of lord of the rings or something similar lurking about in there. camber and longfellow have had an altercation that ended with l being found in a somewhat unlikely position. another area that i think will need to be re-visited and tidied up a bit. but at least i’m cracking on with the story now. currently over 24k, and i’ve managed about 1500 words each of the last three days, just passed twenty thousand words this evening, when you can get into the habit of writing every day the words just seem to flow. definitely good advice to make a point of putting some words out on a regular basis. all of the pro writers seem to give that one piece of advice above all others. i’m not entirely sure that things are going the way i expected them to, this is definitely a darker story than the first marc thyme book. both from the point of view of the good guys and the bad ones. i’ll probably ask mpd to read the story so far, and see what she says about the change in tone. all of the old characters have been introduced in the story so far and i’ve got plans for at least two or three more as things progress. one will be a goodie and at least one won’t, in fact i can see lots of pickle – wip 3 luck in a pickle – wip 2 had a lazy few days when i hardly managed a few hundred words, but topped 1800 today so i’m feeling a bit pleased with myself. it helps not having any real-life tasks to see to for once. i’ve no idea how people with full-time jobs could manage to complete a full novel, although quite a few seem to do it. the story is moving along now. third person point of view does give you a lot more freedom than first person, but you then have to make sure you don’t stick with one aspect of the story and exclude all others. i’ve just written an interrogation scene that feels a bit intense so i’m not sure if i’ll keep it in. these stories are supposed to be reasonably light and this scene is anything but that. i’ll have a think about it and see how i feel when i’ve re-read it a few times. picked up a nifty little progress bar thingie that now shows on the right side of the page. i’m quite pleased with it. i also managed to get small sized links in the side panel to the three books i’ve completed so far. they look much better than the large ones i had before. i’m now advertising on amazon in the us, not had a huge amount of success yet, but with the comment on luck in a pickle – wip 2 luck in a pickle – wip 1 now got over 10k words and the story is coming together reasonably well. i have my usual target of about 80k words and if i can keep the daily total in the region of 1,000 to 1,500 per day i should be there or thereabouts sometime in september. there’s already been more action in this story than in the equivalent parts of ‘luck is a leprechaun.’ we had a nice little car chase, and beagalltach has already made an appearance, plus the police sergeant from book one has been in this one, with no more success it has to be said. the old couple in the library are also still there. i think i’m going to have to do something with them at some point. it’s inevitable that some or all of the main characters are going to have to visit wip 1 flipping and flopping had a re-think, maybe i need to do more research on the crime writing front. i’ve made a start on the story, but i keep getting bogged down in what i suspect are unnecessary details and i’m not yet clear what to do about that. in the meantime, i’ll return to the second in the leprechaun series and move that along a bit. it’s already got a few thousand words written and i have an idea where the story is going to go. interesting differences in approach to writing received at last week’s harrogate international (theakston’s old peculiar) crime writing festival: john grisham said that he plots his whole story out, chapter by chapter in advance of the actual writing. lee child, on the other hand, says he has no real idea of what’s going to happen, he just follows the story through, “i’d be bored with it if i knew the ending in advance.” in a way i’d like to be able to do things the grisham way, but other than a vague general idea, i don’t usually know what’s happening in the next chapter. so it looks like i’m following in lee child’s footsteps – all i need now are the book-sales to go along with it. author beady_books posted on july 31, 2018 july 31, 2018 categories uncategorized leave a comment on flipping and flopping slow going crime writing is somewhat new to me so things are going to take a while to develop but at least i’ve got five thousand words down since i started it. current title is ‘linked secrets’ although that might change later. a dci and a ds are running the case, but they still don’t know who the deceased is. a slightly mutilated body in a shallow grave is a reasonable starting point for a murder mystery. i have an idea that there will be a few more bodies before the case is solved. still wondering if the case is because of a single incident, like a blackmail, or if its just a random pyscho killing. i guess all will be revealed in due course. heard back from valley press about the lemmie book. they aim to give me a decision by the end of august, so at least they have received it and not dismissed it out of hand, which is at least mildly encouraging. author beady_books posted on july 28, 2018 we were at the harrogate crime writers festival. some very interesting speakers and some very big names – lee child, john grisham, ann cleves, val mcdiarmid etc. plus quite a few names that were new
